Peter,
Well, I have not really played with the HU-650 and HU-850 yet. I only verified if the undocumented graphic equaliser was there when I visited my dealer once, and discovered it was not available.
So, the HU-850 and 650 do not have a user accessible EQ. Apparently, the EQ settings are downloaded to the radio at the end of the assembly line in the car factory. The only way to adjust the tone curve is by using the bass and treble controls and the midrange control that is found in the menu.
The reason seems to be because the new HU-x50 radios are completely new inside with DSP based audio processing. This means that there are much more parameters to adjust (5 band parametric EQ for front, rear and center, compressor, Dolby Pro Logic II, delay, etc.) so Volvo found it was no longer manageable with the radio buttons. Instead, for there development needs, they created a PC-based interface.
It appears, however, that if there is something wrong in the settings, it is possible to create a new settings file and download it to the car in a Volvo workshop, without issuing a new radio software which would have meant a new part number.
