Hello All,

I hope you're all well.

I want to get a V50 but I'm not sure how good are the 2.0Diesel engines. Most of the cars with high millage are petrol. Which one is better 1.8F vs 2.0 Diesel? And what kind of special attention do I've to have before buying it?

Any tips are welcome.

I think it all depends on your previous car experience and how you intend to use it. I have driven V50 2.0D since almost 10 years and this is my experience.

I enjoy to drive it high ways and country side roads. You can use the low end torque and have reasonably low rpms. Engine can also give low fuel consumption in these conditions.

I dont however enjoy it in city traffic, engine is not really happy to rev and the combination of engine and manual gear dont give the most smooth rides, especially if you have to change down to 2:nd gear. 3rd gear and up, then its ok.

Engine has two major items that should have been engineered better.
1. DPF and regeneration system (DPF replacement each 120.000km). System is sensitive and many high- mileage cars are stuck in "constant-regeneration"-phase (then forget about the low fuel consumption), which could be due to full DPF, sensorsfaults or general air/fuel mixture related faults. Constant-regeneration may also lead to diesel-run-away.
2. DMF. The low end torque of the engine can in some conditions damage to dual-mass-flywheel (generally keep revs. 2.000+ if you want to floor it). To change at DMF in a workshop will cost you minimum 15.000:-. DIY will cost you approx. 5000:- in hardware and 1.5 days work depending on your prev. level of experience.

To conclude. If you are willing to care for the car/engine and keep an eye on the two positions mentioned above and your driving is countryside/high way, it can be the car for you.
