Dear Volvo-fellows,

at first sorry for writing in English. I´m Bernd from Germany and I like Sweden very much. I have been in Dalarna already, all my furniture is from IKEA and 1 year ago I fulfilled my dream of a swedish car and bought a V40 year from 07/1999 model year 2000, probably fas 1.5. It´s a 122 hp 4 speed auto. 95.000 kilometres are on the clock. Although it is not a fast car I like it very much.
Unfortunately I have a problem with the car that even my VOLVO workshop here in Germany wasn´t able to solve. Or maybe they didn´t want to solve it because the car was still under warranty.
Nearly every time I go over deeper bumps or a chain of bumps then the car makes a slight tick or cklick-noise. On a single bump very often only one click noise, but it becomes very strong when I turn the steering wheel slightly to the left. I can hear 3 or more "click". The sharper the turn the more clicks and the clicks follow faster then. Sometimes the sound is also like a loosened spring. The noise is only on uneven road surfaces, there´s nearly nothing to hear on even surfaces. Sometimes I think the noise is somewhere under the glove box (under the car) and sometimes I think the noise is between the dashboard and the parking brake (under the center of the car). The noise becomes the strongest when I takes long turns to the left out of a motorway, for example if there are bumps. Sounds like ticking, clicking or a tweeting noise. It´s a high and clear sound not a clunk or bonk.
I think it is not CV joint since it is only related to bumps. Must be a suspension component I think. Road holding behaviour is normal.

The noise is very annoying so I would be very grateful to receive some advice here. I know V40 is not a real swedish car but I think lots of them are still on the way in Sweden. So maybe you know this issue up in the North?

Thanks for all ideas. If you want you can answer in Swedish, I can understand a lot of the language but I´m not able to write it.

Mange takk and greets from Germany (near Cologne),
Bernd

Hello and welcome to The Number One Volvo Pleasure Dome...

I would say that your clicking-noise may extract from one, or several bushings that operates the anti roll bar system. Either the bushing itself or one of the bushing rods is damaged.
Due to high mileage it's time to overhaul the complete set up. When You're at it, You might check up the rest of the suspension as well.
