Hi !
I want to ask if it´s normal that after 9000km my T5 consumed for about 2L of oil? I am driving it daily150km (40% city, 60% village roads) . Average fuel consumption is 10 - 11l / 100km. And the oil control diod shines for short while after i do some "strong" turning. When i make oil check, with the oil checker (or how to name this stick), the oil is still not reaching the main measuring field. Or it isn´t properly visible. How can i find out how much oil is needed? And is the oil Mobil 5W 50 good enough for T5?

Thx for response !

Hi,

It seems as high oil consumption to me. Have you checked your crankcase ventilation.Do you have any visible leak of motoroil.

It could also be time for overhauling of the engine if you have many km on car.

Mobil 1 5W50 shall suit your needs well.

How is you checking your motor oil via dipstick.

Is the engine warm and has been of for 5 minutes. That should be a good routine to use for checking your oil level. The level shall not be under min market on dipstick.

I have a similar car with, unfortunatly, approximatly the same oil consumption. I know that the sealing on the crankshaft towards the gearbox quite often leaks if the ventilation of oil gases gets plugged. Have you checked underneath your enigine?

1) there is no visible leak of motoroil, but after the 1st change wich i made after buy (at authorized service) there was some leak - caused by loosed seal screw. This maybe started the problem...

2) i am measuring oil after approx. 20min when is engine off, there could be problem maybe...

3) from the beginning of this problem i have heard some strange tickling from engine. And the oil control was shining occasionally. So i have filled 2L of oil in the engine, but still i cannot find any line of oil on the deepstick :( Just on the one side. Not whole control field :(

Seems like a bigger problem. The car is probably burning the oil.

The ticking could be related to the hydralic valve lifters. Normally the ticking should dissapear after some minutes. But this is not the problem of why youre burning oil.

It could be either valve sealers or piston rings. How does your exhaust smoke look like then starting car and how does it look like then accelrating and deaccelerate.

A leak from the oilplugg sealing has not caused this problem.

Theres also no problem to check the oil level after 20 minutes. Not shure what you mean only on one side of dipstick. It shall be visible on both sides and i guess you still are low on oil.

I also have the T5.
And I put 1 liter of Oil every 900km.
I also thought it was a lot, especially since there is no Blue smoke, and only a few drops when parking.
But I was told that there are 2 problems, 1 is that the car is has over 600.000km on the clock, and the seals inside the engine are leaking up tiny amounts of Oil to the burning chamber, this shows on the readings when measuring the exhaust.

The second is that the car is "breating oil" basically various seals are leaking oil when enging get's Hot/Cold, that is why I have some drops on the ground.

This lso causes me problems with ventilation in the car, If I drive in traffic jam or city traffic, or Idleing, I have to turn of Ventilation since the oil is dripping on the Exhaoust pibe and getting burnt, and then sucked into the coupe.

I was told only way to solve all of this is to do an Engine Renovation, or put a replacement engine.
Too expensive in my opinion.

I instead swithed to a thicker Oil, this reduced the consumption slightly.

I also had the ticking noise in the beginning I had the Car, It was due to Low Oil level, when I filled the oil it stopped.

I always Measure when engine is Cold, this so that I'm sure all oil has sunken to the bottom.

Regards.
Brian.

The colour of the exhaust from the start is somewhat slightly blue, but i thought it´s normal..

The car has 250.000km mileage, (prooved by service book) before 6000km there was whole authorized service, service control including changing of oil, filters, engine sparklings, brakes etc. Car was never crashed. No rust or so. Emissions are OK. No leaking of anything on the ground. The tickling ended when i poured some more oil so i hope it was the reason...

Dipstick is covered by oil just on the side, no on the main body (i don´t know how to descripe it better) the part wich is fully covered by oil (after 20minutes engine off) is just approx 5mm from the lower end of the dipstick :( Still, after adding 2 litres of oil....

I´m going to the authorized service on Thursday, for oil change so i hope it will get finally solved...

Anyway Volvo 850 T5 is amazing car (especially compared to Volvo S40 1.9TD wich i had before).

Yes, do an Oil change, Then reset the small milage clock, and when it shows 800/900 km, check the stick a couple of hours after engine has been turned of.
If it is at the bottom of the stick now, fill 1 litre, and reset the clock again and repeat.
There is 1 liter from the lowest point to the higest marker on the stick.

This is what I do, you might have to adjust the amount of kilometers you drive to what your engine is consuming, perhaps start at 500km to see what the stick is showing.

No doubt about what we are talking about is a high consumption but I need to clearify that all alumina engines is "leaking" oil thruogh the actual engine block. This since in fact you can not have the casting process completely without having cavities in the finalized block. If youré lucky you get few, if your'e not fortunate you get more.
