:oops:

Volvo recommends 7500 miles per change in this car. I drive very little these days (10K/year) and it’s mostly highway (13 miles each way to work, some 200 mile trips, all highway). The Prius is the city car. The dealership changed the oil before I got the car. I still drained it and put my Mobil 1 in it, so their comment on sodium may be spot on.

A few thoughts;
They do call the engine a “B525” which makes me wonder how many engines they group as such. The proper term would be B5254T2. I’m not sure by their grouping if they include the non-turbo engines.

1, Iron is high – it gets higher with miles, so it’s not abnormal and I’m not worried (simply put, more miles, more iron wore off iron parts in the engine and are in suspension).

2, Copper is lower than average. Good. Copper usually comes from bushings and bearings.

3, Molybdenum – depends on oil. Mobil 1 might have a lot. It’s a friction reducer, so a good thing.

4, Sodium – I’m not losing coolant so at next analysis I’ll see if the “previous oil” theory holds. It should be far lower then.

5, Viscosity (SuS) at 210F is a touch low, at the lower limit for a 30 weight oil. If I interpret that correctly, it means it’s a little thicker than it should be. Almost a high-end 20 weight.

6, TBN is *great* at 2.3, so based on this I could use the oil for another 2500 miles and see where I’d be. Given the iron and viscosity I won’t.

At this point, I don’t see a reason to change before another 10K miles on the engine. The next change will have me analyze the oil again and keep an eye on the iron (should be similar), sodium (should be none) and viscosity (should be higher). Total Base Number should be in the same range, meaning I have a good margin.

[later thought] I changed the PCV system, which touches both oil and coolant parts. It’s possibly I got some cross contamination there, leading to the sodium reading. If that’s the case, I should have no sodium in the oil next time around!
